Transformational Leaders vs. Narcissists

Change Logic is proud to announce that the article, “Transformational Leader or Narcissist: How Grandiose Narcissists Can Create and Destroy Organizations and Institutions,” written by Change Logic’s Co-Founder and Stanford University Graduate School of Business  Professor Charles O’Reilly (in collaboration with Jennifer Chatman of UC Berkeley), has been named the winner of the 2021 Best Article Award by California Management Review.

Congratulations to Charles and Jennifer!

The article convincingly argues that truly transformational leaders can challenge the status quo, provide a vision of a promising future, and motivate and inspire their followers to join in the pursuit of a better world. The article is also an insightful and timely warning about the deep risk narcissists pose to organizations and institutions (and, perhaps, democracies, too).

Interestingly, last year, Charles was a recipient of another Best Article of the Year Award by California Management Review. This article, “The Three Stages of Disruptive Innovation: Idea Generation, Incubation, and Scaling,” was written in collaboration with Change Logic’s Principal Manager, Andy Binns.

A note for our readers: each year, California Management Review recognizes the article published during the preceding year that has made the most important contribution to management practice. The winning article is initially selected as a finalist based on its performance and distribution, and then the final selection is made by members of the California Management Review Editorial Board and International Advisory Board.
